Description & Details:

The Coordinator of Seahawk Adventures - Challenge Course reports to the Assistant Director for Seahawk Adventures and supports the operation, administration, and risk management of a comprehensive challenge course program. The Coordinator supports other Seahawk Adventures programming, including trips and clinics, climbing wall, leadership development, rentals, and assigned special events.

Description of Work 

Supervision – 30%

Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, mentor, and evaluate adventure student staff.

Supervise daily staff functions, scheduling, payroll, program assignments, and appropriate placement of staff based on program needs. 

Train and advise staff in high, low, indoor, and portable teambuilding activities and document ongoing training in accordance with industry standards. 

Assess staff competencies to determine readiness for student staff advancement opportunities. 

Program Management – 25%

Assist with the operation and administration of a multi-faceted recreation program inclusive of goals and objectives for the implementation of a comprehensive challenge course program.

Collaborate with Seahawk Adventures professional staff to plan, schedule, assess, and support adventure programming.

Support administrative and financial processes, including but not limited to: budget preparation, projections, tracking, reconciliation, annual reports, policy and procedure development, and assigned financial transactions.

Monitor adherence to Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) and other national standards and coordinate documentation for equipment inventory, inspections, maintenance, retirement, replacement schedules, surplus property disposal, and special maintenance projects.

Maintain relevant professional affiliations, training, and certifications necessary to lead adventure recreation programs effectively.

Work evening and weekend hours as required and perform other related duties as assigned in accordance with the mission and vision of the university.

Coordination – Operations & Customer Service – 25%

Collaborate with marketing staff to develop, implement, and assess strategies that promote the Challenge Course and Seahawk Adventures programming.

Analyze usage data, evaluate trends, compile reports, and use participant feedback to improve programs and resolve concerns.

Coordinate registrations, reservations, staffing, billing, evaluations, customer service processes, and operational details for Challenge Course programming.

Build effective relationships with campus departments, external organizations, and off-campus agencies to support program delivery, corporate programming, and not-for-profit programming.

Information/Records Administration & Risk Management – 20% 

  • Identify risks associated with adventure programming, maintain standards that support a safe environment, and ensure challenge course safety and risk management meet industry standards.
  • Develop, maintain, evaluate, update, and revise program resources including but not limited to: procedures, staff manuals, standard operating procedures, emergency action plans, waivers, personnel files, competency checklists, etc.
  • Complete and maintain required documentation including but not limited to: accident and incident reports, participation records, program and participant evaluations, equipment inventory and replacement schedules, and confidential participant medical information.

Internal and External Working Relationships

This position maintains regular contact campus partners, external organizations, equipment vendors, and professional colleagues. These relationships support program delivery, supervision, advising, training, service contracts, equipment planning, assessment, and the development of outdoor adventure program standards.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Leadership, Recreation, Experiential Education, Student Development, Sports Administration, or related field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be from an appropriately accredited institution.
  • One year of adventure programming experience.
  • Experience in challenge course facilitation, staff training, and programming

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Master’s degree in Leadership, Recreation, Experiential Education, Student Development, Sports Administration, or related field.
  • Graduate Assistant experience in collegiate recreation programming.
  • Two years of outdoor adventure programming experience, including group leadership, supervision, training, and equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to teach leadership, facilitation, environmental ethics, outdoor skills, and at least two outdoor activities, such as surfing, kayaking, SUP, rock climbing, hiking, or backpacking.
  • Documented technical competency in challenge course programming.
  • ACCT Challenge Course Manager Certification.
  • Leave No Trace Level 1 or Level 2 completion.
  • WEA Certificate of Outdoor Leadership or equivalent training or course participation.

Required Certifications or Licensure 

  • Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Certification, or the ability to obtain within six months of hire. 
  • ACCT Challenge Course Level 2 certification, or equivalent experience to obtain Level 2 certification, which may be obtained after hire. 
  • Valid Driver’s License.
