Description & Details:

The Outdoor Recreation Coordinator will assist with personnel management responsibilities that include the training, developing and supervising of 30-40 student and nonstudent supervisors and facilitators and assists in coordinating scheduling and staffing for programming. They will also assist with developing, implementing and evaluating policies, procedures related to the programs and facilities including but not limited to, emergency action plans, standard and local operating procedures, equipment inspection and replacement as well as other related program policies and administrative processes. They will provide onsite supervision and coordination for adventure trip and climbing wall programs.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation, outdoor education, management, human development or other relevant field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience interacting with outdoor education programs, facilities, and leadership development.
  • Evening and weekend hours required. Hours may vary based on operational needs.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Demonstrated challenge course management experience including strategic planning, budget management, equipment purchasing and maintenance and risk management.
  • Demonstrated success in training and supervision of challenge course facilitators according to ACCT standards and best practices for customer service.
  • Experience developing and administering collaborative programming with academic and student development organizations utilizing experiential methodology.
  • Demonstrated pursuit of personal professional development through participation in a national industry association or organization such as ACCT, AEE, AORE, etc.
  • Possess a current CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Current Level II Challenge Course Practitioner Certification in accordance with the standards as set by (ACCT), or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse individuals.
  • Range of motion and flexibility that allows various positions and postures necessary to conduct practitioner tasks.
  • Utilize various challenge course-related gear and equipment.
  • Ascend to, traverse at, and descend from heights that may exceed 25 feet.
  • Perform required duties for extended periods of time while exposed to adverse conditions including, and not limited to, perception, temperature.
Responsibilities
  • Assist with supervising, implementing and evaluating comprehensive challenge course, team building and leadership development programming including high and low element challenge course and mobile initiatives.
  • Assist with managing client recruitment, contracts, invoicing, registration, risk management, and program development.
  • Assist with hiring, training, scheduling, supervision, payroll and evaluation of Outdoor Recreation program staff. Staff includes 30-40 student and non-student supervisors and facilitators.
  • Assist with providing leadership development and training for staff based on industry standards and best practices in the field of outdoor and experiential education.
  • Assist with managing operations of cross-country ski and snowshoe center including staffing, equipment rental, programming and transportation.
  • Assist with management and operation of adventure trip program including providing onsite supervision and coordination of trips.
  • Assist with climbing wall programming as needed. Ensure university and department policies are being followed.
  • Assist with safe operation of challenge course and team building activities.
  • Ensure proper maintenance and compliance with applicable State and County regulations and industry standards.
  • Perform visual tactile inspection of both indoor and outdoor challenge course hardware and equipment.
  • Inspect, maintain, and purchase challenge course and cross-country ski equipment as needed.
  • Assist with scheduling and completing annual challenge course inspections.
