Title: Course Manager

Reports to: Applied Adventure Consulting Management

 

 

The Company

 

Site: Long Hollow Canopy Tours (“Long Hollow”) offers a thrilling tree-based aerial adventure in beautiful and historic Galena, IL. This gorgeous site includes a top-notch canopy tour and aerial trekking park. The canopy tour includes 6 ziplines, rappel, sky-bridge, and a quick jump. The aerial trekking park includes 32 unique elements, 5 ladders, 2 tree houses, and dual racing ziplines! The site operates April-November.

 

Management Team: Long Hollow is managed by Applied Adventure Consulting (AAC). AAC is a team of industry professionals with decades of experience in the field. AAC provides support and advising for the Long Hollow team. The AAC team works remotely, but regularly visits the site in-person.

Position Description

 

The Role: The Seasonal Course Manager is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day course operations at Long Hollow Canopy Tours. This includes course maintenance, inspections, hiring, guide training, scheduling, staff management, reservation management, community involvement, and general site upkeep. The Seasonal Course Manager ensures the success of Long Hollow Canopy Tours by ensuring a high level of safety, well-trained team members, and positive engagement between team members and guests.

 

Course Manager position key responsibilities include but not limited to:

 

Operations: 

  • Foster and lead a culture of professionalism, teamwork, quality, and fun!
  • Maintain appropriate level of professionalism and competence as well as adherence to protocols
  • and training standards
  • Provides oversite of day-to-day operations
  • Can perform opening and closing duties
  • Can act as Ground Support, Manager on Duty, Reservationist, or Guide for daily operations (depending on daily staffing needs) and can respond to day-of scheduling matters, any inclement weather decisions, any guest complaints, and staff needs 
  • Can act as Incident Commander in the event of a rescue or emergency
  • Helps maintain a clean and organized site, including the Welcome Center, gear areas, guide break area, and outdoor areas
  • Clearly communicates standard operating procedures and local operating procedures guidelines
  • Helps manage incident reports, trip reports, and course inspection reports
  • Assist in investigating incidents and implementing operational corrective actions as needed
  • Help manage reservation system and tour inventory availability to ensure optimum guest experience
  • Responds to guest needs/complaints efficiently on course
  • Works with AAC Retail Manager to coordinate retail inventory and facilitate and track retail sales

Training/Management

  • Assists and/or leads staff training on all day-to-day operations and rescues in collaboration with the AAC training team
  • Helps maintain guide training logs and documentation
  • Coordinates and helps ensures staff is trained to follow Emergency Action Plan
  • Lead and develop team of 10-25 hourly staff
    • Mentor, train, and develop the team for career progression, performance improvement, and recognition purposes
    • Provide overall direction and leadership to all on-site staff in line with the company vision
    • Perform or assist with HR duties under the direction of the AAC team, including payroll, hiring, advancement, reviews, discipline, and terminatio
    •  Always make your team look good by helping them in any way needed to achieve their goals and responsibilities
  • Manage the seasonal schedule ensuring staffing levels are appropriate daily in a way that is efficient and economical


Inspections and Maintenance:

  • Help create and maintain a maintenance plan and ensure maintenance is completed in collaboration with the AAC course services team
  • Helps manage and perform (as required i.e., weekly, monthly, and/or periodic)              course, device, and e equipment inspections and maintenance
  • Maintains equipment inventory records as needed
  • Manages and performs as needed:
    • Course maintenance and general upkeep
    • Vehicle maintenance and general upkeep
    • Infrastructure maintenance (building, landscape) and general upkeep
    • Communicate all maintenance needs to upper management as needed

Marketing/Community: 

  • Ensure marketing initiatives are implemented on-site as directed by the marketing department  
  • Support all media related visits and events with direction from the marketing department  
  • Be the face of Long Hollow for local community events and business functions by 
  • creating and fostering new business relationships that help build intrinsic value for the Long Hollow Brand

Qualifications

  • 3 years’ experience in tourism/service industry or similar 
  • 1 years’ experience managing a staff of 10+ 
  • Excellent computer skills with proficiency in Excel, Word, and Outlook 
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative management style 
  • Excels in working in a fast-paced environment 
  • Outdoor industry experience is a plus, outdoor enthusiasm is required  
  • Risk management and experience working at height a plus

Compensation Details

  • Mid or late April to mid-November seasonal employment
  • $20-$24/hr. dependent on experience
  • Seasonal, hourly employee, non-exempt
  • 30-40 hours/week. Must have a flexible schedule with full availability on the weekends and all holidays. Work hours may be variable.
