Adventure Education Coordinator

Tamarack Camps Outdoor Education Coordinators are responsible for the delivery of educational programming while overseeing seasonal facilitators in their training and execution of programming. Candidates must be able to provide a positive learning experience in any environment and possess strong organization and planning skills in order to manage programs and materials effectively. Communication with management and seasonal staff must be maintained professionally at all times.
Reports to: Program Manager Outdoor Education / Assistant Director
Compensation: From $375 per week. Pay based on experience & qualifications. Seasonal communal housing is included.
Minimum experience & qualifications: Must have at least three full years of experience within the Outdoor Education field. Extensive experience facilitating group initiatives, climbing structures, high ropes courses, and zip lines, with at least one year in a trainer/supervisory role. Capable of training entry level staff as well as evaluating and developing practicing facilitators. ACCT CCM Practitioner Certification or equivalent documented experience and training. American Red Cross First Aid and CPR certification.
Additional qualifications & attributes: Multi-task oriented; flexible; able to pay strict attention to detail; is a thinking practitioner that has a desire to continuously train and educate both self and others. Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of experiential education and industry standards regarding challenge courses.
Supplementary but not required: ACCT/PRCA/AEE membership(s), American Red Cross Lifeguard.
Areas of responsibility:
A Coordinator will be primarily responsible for the coordination and the delivery of program for our Outdoor Education clientele. The major areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:
- Facilitating Adventure Education programs to address specific group needs as appropriate, facilitating other programs as needed (i.e. Wilderness Ed. & Cultural Ed. program areas)
- Providing training and modeling exemplary facilitation to staff
- Ensuring that staff are facilitating programs in accordance with current industry standards
- Providing evaluations and feedback to seasonal staff as requested by the Program Manager
- Inventory, inspection, and basic maintenance of program materials, gear and courses
- Supervising and maintaining the completion of inspection logs, program reports, participant number forms, and others as designated by Program Manager
- Collaboration with Outdoor Education Management Team to develop and revise programming
- Acting as camp host and performing on-call duties according to a scheduled rotation
- Collaboration with other Outdoor Education team members regarding onsite coordination of groups; ensuring that all groups’ needs are met from arrival to departure
- Collaboration with other program coordinators to ensure that general outdoor education program maintenance is completed properly and in a timely fashion
- Demonstrating excellent leadership within Outdoor Education staff

Length of trainings will range from 3-7 days per training. Trainers are responsible for the content delivery of training activities
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Deliver both employee and leadership level training to Bonsai clientele.
- Communicate and uphold the Bonsai ethos and ensure all course operations are conducted in accordance with Bonsai and ACCT standards.
- Responsible for maintaining adequate inventory of all Bonsai Design supplies and accurately recording their usage throughout the training season
- Create a positive learning environment and utilize effective instructional strategies to enable trainees to be successful.
- Monitor and coach trainees throughout learning process (in class, on course, rescue school) as appropriate to ensure transfer of learning has occurred.
- Deliver training utilizing multimedia visual aids.
- Deliver detailed communications regarding training events.
- Assess trainees to measure progress and to evaluate effectiveness of training.
- Maintain documentation such as evaluations, skills assessments, written exams, participant waivers, incident reports and receipts.
- Provide daily written reports to Bonsai HQ and training department supervisor.

Definition: A Canopy Guide provides customer service, instructs and leads participant groups on the canopy tour.

Summary of essential job functions:
• Provides excellent customer service to all guests of Navitat Canopy Adventures
• Creates an enriching experience for participants by promoting environmental literacy and deepening people’s appreciation of the area
• Engages guests with local ecology, geography, geology, history and culture.
• Ensures all course operations are conducted in accordance with Navitat Canopy Adventures safety standards
• Completes an inspection of all course components and of all course gear daily
• Fits harnesses and helmets correctly and supervises the use of all personal protective equipment
• Conducts participant orientation session and pre-screening
• Successfully completes 100 hours of in-house, technical and interpretive training before hire

Qualifications:

Brief overview of organization:
Adventure Links is a professional and forward thinking outdoor education center operating out of Hemlock Overlook Regional Park in Clifton, VA. We design innovative and engaging adventure programs for youth and adults in the surrounding D.C/ Mid-Atlantic region and the entire east coast. We are motivated to run a company that allows our staff members and our participants a chance to access greater potential, build authentic communities and develop a deeper perspective of their relationship with the natural world.
Position description:
During our spring and fall seasons staff members lead our 1-5 day long group programs which include a high/low challenge course, rock climbing, paddling, caving, environmental education and outdoor living skills. During our summer season staff members lead summer camp programs or group programs.
Position qualifications:
Ø Minimum 21 years old. College degree in related field preferred.
Ø WFA and CPR Minimum. WFR expected by second year of employment. Staff members with WFR certification are given preference on overnight and expedition programs.
Ø Genuine desire to work with youth.
Ø Able to work full and active days outside in the elements.
Ø Experience working with youth in a leadership role. Training and experience relating to outdoor leadership, experiential education or classroom teaching is preferred.
Ø Flexible, good humored and personable. Strong work ethic, responsible and accountable.
Ø Invested in running quality Outdoor Education programs and developing skills as a facilitator and outdoor leader.
Ø Preference is given to applicants who are able to work for the entire length the employment period.

Remuneration:
Incoming staff can earn between $350-375 a week working programs. Additional responsibilities can add to income. Higher rate may be given to those with greater career experience and skills. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Be responsible for overall course maintenance, regular inspections, and required reporting/documentation, manage equipment and supply inventory, facilitate zipline tours, and provide an interactive and enjoyable experience for participants.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: At least 3 years of previous zip line or challenge course maintenance experience, previous building experience a plus, CPR/First Aid certification a plus
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Daily responsibilities will include strenuous activities such as hiking, climbing, and lifting, etc. Must be physically able and willing to perform all tasks and work in all weather conditions. Must be able to work well in a team environment. Must be at least 21 years of age and have a valid driver's license.

Ø Working and interacting effectively one on one with other NOC departments on a daily basis, specifically food service, sales, Rafting Center, Bike Shop, and other departments involved with accommodating GAP groups.
Ø Assisting GAP Manager in all aspects of GAP programming, facilitating, staffing, scheduling, and administrative functions.

These courses often include a sequence of initiatives including problem solving games, low ropes elements, and a high ropes challenge to inspire discussion and reflection particular to their group’s goal. Each course varies based on the needs and requests of the client, (school or youth group).

The GA will assist the Program Coordinator of Outdoor Adventures in all program components including outdoor operations center, climbing facility, gear rental, trip/clinic program, and new challenge course. Depending on qualifications and experience, work load may be shifted towards more relevant areas within the Outdoor Adventures program. Position job duties include but are not limited to:
• Assist in the operations, administration, and supervision of the OA program
• Assist in the budget process, including budget development, payroll projections, purchasing, etc
• Assist in marketing of all program aspects
• Supervise student staff including recruitment, training, and evaluation
